Many crystal enthusiasts wonder whether it's safe to cleanse their crystals using water.
While water cleansing is a potent method, not all crystals can withstand this process without potential damage.
In this guide, we'll explore which crystals are water-safe and which ones should be treated with caution.
I have listed all the crystals that should and should not be cleansed in water below.
What Crystals Are Not Water Safe?
Amazonite is not water safe. It won't dissolve in water, but can absorb water which can damage it over time.
Safe way to Cleanse without water: Cleanse your Amazonite crystal by smudging with sweet grass, sage, cedar or incense. Pass the crystal several times through the wafting smoke. You can also let it sit out in the sun for a few hours.
Aquamarine is not water safe. It will dissolve in water.
Safe way to Cleanse without water: Cleanse Aquamarine by burying them in the Earth or pot of dirt for 24 hrs. Also crystal clusters make great chargers and can also cleanse any crystal just by placing it on top of the cluster for 24 hours.
Black Tourmaline is not water safe. it is okay to place in water for a short period of time but long-term exposure can cause it to disintegrate.
Safe way to cleanse without water: Fill a bowl with dry brown rice and bury your stone beneath the grains. Dispose of the rice immediately after the cleansing, as the rice is said to have absorbed the energy you're trying to eradicate
Fluorite is not water safe. It is water soluble, especially in salt water, which can really damage it.
Safe way to cleanse without water: Smudging and using sage sticks to burn away those bad vibes and keep things sweet. Smudging is a great way of clearing negative energy and as simple as waving the smoke over the crystal and letting intention settle in.
Hematite is not water safe: Water can cause your Hematite to rust thanks to the iron oxide content
Safe way to cleanse without water: Instead of using water on your stone you can simply use a soft bristle brush (like a toothbrush) and give it a rub every now and then to shake it free of trapped energy. You can also put on top of rock crystals.
Kyanite cannot be submerged into the water as it will dissolve. And if exposed to water it can leak aluminum!
Safe way to cleanse without water: Moon light is very effective with Kyanite. Set your stone out before nightfall and plan to bring it in before 11 a.m.
Labradorite is not water safe. It should not have long term exposure to water or the crystal will start to dissolve and take away the shine.
Safe way to cleanse without water: Labradorite have the ability to direct your negative energy towards the ground. Dig a hole a few inches deep in the ground and place your stone in the hole.
Lapis Lazuli is not water safe. It is formed with calcite, calcite can dissolve, and contain pyrite which is extremely toxic in water.
Safe way to cleanse without water: The best way to dissolve any negative energies your stone has absorbed is to cleansed it with sage smoke. Or you might want to place it close to Amethyst or Clear Quartz to remove unwanted energies.
Lepidolite's exposure to water can cause it to crack and flake a part.
Safe way to cleanse without water: Feel free to leave the crystal in direct moonlight for a night. As for sunlight, an hour is more than enough – indirect sunlight is better.
Malachite should never be exposed to water because it will release toxic fumes, immediately wash your hands if you touch malachite that was exposed in water.
Safe way to cleanse without water: Cleanse a Malachite by placing it on a Crystal Quartz or in geode.
Moonstones are not water safe. Putting Moonstone crystals in water or salt water can cause irreversible damage to your crystals.
Safe way to cleanse without water: For moonstone, we recommend charging this crystal under the moonlight. It's especially effective to charge moonstone on the full moon or new moon.
Selenite is not water safe. It is originally form of Gypsum, when it is exposed to water it will revert back to original Gypsum. So if you want your selenite stay as selenite, avoid it in the water.
Safe way to cleanse without water: Selenite does not usually need to be cleansed. But if you must there are several ways to clean selenite without using water. You can place your selenite crystals moonlight overnight. Or you can use smudge stick and pass the crystal though smoke.
Turquoise is not water safe and should never be exposed to water because it can not only fade the color but permanently damage the crystal worst it can be dissolve.
Safe way to cleanse without water: You can clean the Turquoise under the moonlight set the crystal outside at dusk.
Crystals That Are Water Safe
These crystals are safe to cleanse using water, take baths or prepare moon water.
Amethyst can go in water. As Amethyst is a solid 7 on the Mohs Hardness Scale along with all other types of Quartz crystals, it is safe to put in water. But don’t put amethyst in direct sunlight!
Aventurine is water safe. It is a pretty tough crystal which is why you can also cleanse it with salt or saltwater. Aventurine’s Mohs Hardness Scale is 6.5 -7.
Black Obsidian is water safe. Putting it in contact with water is totally safe and it will not cause any damage to this black volcanic glass.
Bloodstone is water safe. It is a polycrystalline material and is fairly tough and resistant to fractures and chipping. As bloodstone is a type of quartz it has a hardness of 6-7 on the Mohs scale.
Carnelian’s is water safe. Its Mohs hardness scale is 7, so it can go in regular water, but not salt water, as it can damage the crystal over time.
Citrine is water safe. It is composed of water safe minerals and has a Mohs Hardness Scale of 7.
Clear Quartz is water safe. Any crystal from quartz family can definitely be put in water, its Mohs Hardness Scale is 7.
Rose Quartz is water safe as it is part of the quartz family. It is a very stable crystal when exposed to water and its Mohs Hardness Scale is also 7.
Jasper is water safe. This specific crystal specimen can be safely cleaned in water. Its Mohs Hardness Scale is between 6.5-7.
Tiger Eye is water safe like all quartz crystals. it exhibits relatively good hardness and durability of 6.5-7 in Mohs Hardness Scale.
Always double check when it comes to salt water, because salt can be corrosive!
If you are in doubt, it's always best to do some research first to avoid any accidents.
And in case you are looking for crystals that can be cleansed in water. and you don´t feel comfortable submerging the crystals inside the water, you can always use a crystal bottle with a separate compartment. This way the crystals are close enough to infuse the water but not in direct contact.
