A question that I get asked a lot is if a certain crystal is safe to be cleansed in water.
Cleansing crystals with water is a powerful way to energetically cleanse them but not all crystals should be cleansed using this method as they could get damaged.
So, which crystals should NOT be put in water?
Crystals that are 5 or below on the Mohs hardness scale should not be put in water.
The Mohs Hardness scale is a scale from 1-10 that tests the hardness of certain minerals by testing the resistance of those minerals.
Not Water Safe
Crystals that should not be put in water include:
- Fluorite (especially salt water)
- Labradorite (Do not submerge for a long time)
- Black Tourmaline
- Lapis Lazuli
Water safe crystals
These crystals are safe to cleanse using water, take baths or prepare moon water.
- Black Obsidian (FYI: can break in EXTREME cold or hot water temperatures!)
- Carnelian (not safe for salt water)
Always double check when it comes to salt water, because salt can be corrosive!
If you are in doubt, it's always best to do some research first to avoid any accidents.
And in case you are looking for crystals for crystal water and you don´t feel comfortable submerging the crystals inside the water, you can always use a crystal bottle with a separate compartment. This way the crystals are close enough to infuse the water but not in direct contact.
